    5 Common Illnesses of Ageing

    March 19, 2019 /

As we age, we are more susceptible to developing an illness. Partly because as much as we hate to admit it, our bodies are older and struggle to work as well as they did when we were younger, and partly because of the years of ‘abuse’ we have subjected them to such as poor diet, sedentary lifestyles and environmental factors such as secondhand smoke and pollution. There are times when our genetics are to blame too! You can thank your parents for an increased risk of illnesses such as diabetes, strokes and some forms of cancer.   Whilst we cannot eliminate our risk of developing diseases we can reduce…

About Me

Hi and Welcome! I’m Susan and I am a nurse, caregiver and beach lover. Here you will find all things related to chronic illness and caregiving!

  • When I was a student nurse, I had a mentor that spoke at length about her time working within the mental health services in New Zealand. How progressive they were and how they were leading the way with treatments, both psychosocial and pharmacological. She also spoke about how several clinics had units for children with eating disorders. Girls as young as 5 were being diagnosed with anorexia and bulemia. ( continued in comments)

FreeFromDiets 🙌🏻
I’m so proud to be an ambassador for the #FreeFromDiets campaign started by @mollyjforbes - because honestly, our kids deserve BETTER 💪🏻. They deserve to be given the chance to learn about nutrition and the joy of exercising for their health and their minds without the endless weight loss narrative that surrounds them day in and out.
We’re campaigning for tighter regulations around the way diet clubs, slimming services and weight loss products are marketed around children and young people - no more “join your local slimming world club” leaflets in the book bag and PLEASE fuck off with your “get beach body ready” billboard opposite the school sports field. 🖕🏻🖕🏻
The facts are there to see - 52% of girls aged 11-16 worry about the way they look and 43% say they aren’t joining in with sports because they fear being judged over their appearance. There are countless studies that show diet culture harms our younger generations and use of diet clubs/diet products at a young age have been linked to eating disorders. WE CAN DO BETTER. Mental health in adolescents is at an all time low - and we’ve got to break this cycle. For them. 👌🏻👌🏻
Want more info? You can visit https://freefromdiets.org or check out @mollyjforbes for details of live events where you can chat to Molly herself and the team, starting in London next month. I’ve tagged my fellow ambassadors so you can check them out too. ❤️

  • I spent most of yesterday recovering from Emma's party, so Michael brought A&E fishing. The sheer joy that they managed to catch fish themselves is infectious. They went to school this morning excited to tell everyone about all the fish they caught. Whilst it's still warm enough to go swimming, the sea will start to cool down soon, so finding ways to still be at the beach makes us all happy 🌊
  • I hate my body. I wish that I was in a position to love it like I did after Alex & Emma were born. I didn't just love it then, I adored it. Any time I looked in the mirror I was filled with pride over the fact that I had grown, birthed and fed these two humans. Then 3 years ago all that changed and since that day I feel like I wake up every day with a new problem. A new way in which my body had failed me yet again. How can I be 32 and need a walking stick? How can I struggle to wash myself and parent these 2 babies of mine? And it's depressing as fuck to realise that I just don't function the same as others and that this is more than likely the way I will be for the rest of my life. My mantra is "it could be worse" and it could be. Of course it could be. But it could be a whole lot better too!
  • Today was our first day back at school for both our smallies. Alex started 'big' school and Emmy went to Kindergarten. Although there were a lot of nerves over the last few days they went relatively well. There were no tears on my part (I cried them yesterday 🙈) but I have been a basket case all day. This is such a new experience for us all, and one that we don't really have any control over. It's the beginning of a life that they have more independence over (which is fantastic) but it's hard to let go. I'm hoping tomorrow will be as smooth as today 🤞
  • I'm writing this as a migraine starts. It's been a hard month, so I'm hoping September is better. Things I'm looking forward to this month, Emma starting δημοτική (kindergarten) and Alex starting in δημοτικό (primary school). Our little lady turning 5. I can't believe we will have a 5 year old and 6 year old soon. And the best part of the whole month? It's still summer so plenty of visits to the beach. I'm also hoping to read a few books. What are your plans for this month?
  • We are back from a day at the beach, pizza is in the oven, babies are freshly washed, we are in our jammies and we are watching Spiderman. I don't think there is a better way to spend a Thursday. I kept Alex and Emma home from school today as I was physically unable to get out of bed. Between morning stiffness and feeling like I'm made of out lead, there are days that I just cannot get up. I do think we had a better day together though. I recently had a conversation with someone who said that they thought I was much better because I was at the beach. The truth is that I am sicker now than I was a year ago, I just appear to be going downhill. However, I do not want Alex and Emma to remember their childhood as a time of me being unable to do anything or being asleep all the time, so I save my energy. I sleep during the day so that I can play in the evenings. I buy easy food to make so that we can cook together quickly. I spend 6 days recovering from a weekend at the beach, but that is okay because my two beautiful children get the best of me, when I can give it to them. Invisible illnesses are just that, invisible. We just pick the best of ourselves to put out there.
  • 9 years ago today, we got on a plane headed for Cyprus. We didn't have a plan as to how long we would stay, but I think we thought maybe a year. 1 turned in to 2 which turned in 5 and here we are 9 years later. It's not been easy and there have been times that I have wanted the security of having our family close by like when Emma was 4 months old and we packed everything up, booked flights and a week before we were due to leave, I changed my mind! So much has happened since we came here, things that I never dreamt of but the most important being our two, beautiful babies. We got married by the beach with them by our side. Coming to Cyprus was supposed to be a 'break' from the recession. We were going to spend some time here before going home and having a family. Instead, our family was created here and I honestly couldn't have wished for better. Cyprus we ❤ you!
  • It's finally May and it is finally warm, which means I can start planning our summer. I'm looking forward to endless days at the beach, long hot nights spent with loved ones whilst the smallies play. I'm looking forward to summer fruits, sandy feet and bbq's. I CANNOT wait to turn off my 6am alarm and feel the much needed sun on my skin. Tell me, how do you plan on spending your summer?
  • If you watched my stories last night on blood pressure, you know that I spoke about how preventative measures are better than dealing with an illness. It's common sense, but it is something that we all struggle with. We know that we should eat better or exercise more but how many of us actually do it? I am the worst of the worst but the one thing that I actually do work hard at is my mental health. It has always been something that I struggled with but the last 2 years have been really difficult and living with chronic pain leaves you very little time to deal with anything else. But I have 2 smallies to love and care for and it's not good enough for me to neglect my mental health because they are the ones that will suffer in the long term. So every morning I get up and take the tablets in my hand. I take 120mg of Cymbalta - an antidepressant that keeps me mentally stable. 200mcg of thyroxine that keeps my body functioning. Thyroid disease doesn't just cause you to gain weight, it messes with your brain too and causes depression. 1 nurofen Express and 2 paracetamol - for pain control purposes. It's better to be on top of the pain because I get really down if I can't do something I think I should be able to. Maternal Mental Health is more than just the period after giving birth. It's more than just treating symptoms that you currently have. It's about being proactive and ensuring that you are as well as can be, even if that means you need to take medication.
